Ptolemy XIII

When Cleopatra's father, Ptolemy XII, died, Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy XIII ruled Egypt together. Cleopatra did not like this. At this time, Caesar and Pompey were fighting a war over Rome. When Caesar finally beat Pompey, Pompey fled to Egypt, seeking the help of Ptolemy XIII, Cleopatra's brother. Cleopatra saw this as a chance to finally knock her brother off the throne. She sent out forces to kill Pompey upon his arrival. They succeeded. For killing his rival, Caesar and Cleopatra became friends. Caesar wanted Cleopatra to become sole ruler of Egypt. When Ptolemy found out, he was furious. Thus came the Alexandrian War between the forces Ptolemy XIII and the forces of Caesar. During this war, Ptolemy XIII drowned in the Nile River, trying to escape. Now Cleopatra was the one and only ruler.

Julius Caesar

After the war, Caesar remained in Egypt. He and Cleopatra became lovers. In 46 BC, she became pregnant with Caesar's only true son, Caesarion. Alas, they did not marry because Romans did not socially accept a Roman man marrying someone other then a Roman woman and Cleopatra wanted to stay ruler of Egypt. So, Caesar left. He soon became dictator of Rome. Cleopatra visited Caesar in Rome with Caesarion, and remained there until Caesar's death in 44 BC.

Marc Antony

After Caesar's death, Rome was chaotic. Octavian Augustus, Marc Antony, and Lepidus all came together to become the Second Triumvirate. The sought revenge over Caesar's death, and their goal was to seek revenge over those responsible for the death of Caesar. After they defeated all of their enemies, they divided the Roman Empire amongst the three of them. Antony received Egypt. Soon after, Antony divorced his wife, Octavia (Octavian's sister), and married Cleopatra. The Roman Senate and Octavian declared war on Antony and his armies. After many defeats, Marc Antony's armies turned on him at the Battle of Actium. Instead of being killed and humiliated by Octavian, Cleopatra and Marc Antony committed suicide.

Death

Cleopatra committed suicide on August 1st, 30 BC. She is said to have ordered a venomous snake to be put in a giant basket of figs. When Octavian's guards found her, she was laying on her bed, dead.

Importance

Cleopatra is a famous woman figure. She used her wits as a weapon to become very famous and remembered even to this day. Cleopatra became sole ruler of Egypt, even though she was a woman. The Egyptians respected her for her devotion to her country. She will be remembered by future posterity.
